Google release new feature in the user dashboard, called Me On The Web. The Me on the Web section in your Google Dashboard can help you understand and manage what people see when they search for you on Google. Basically, you can monitor how you look on the internet.
This application is for those who wants to find out online reference about their name and other personal information about them that might be wrong, or misuse. Specifically, Me on the Web simplify Google Alerts, Google’s features that will give you alerts when the search engine found something specific on the internet via email. This app will email the user when it found information related to the user. You can use Me on the Web to alert you when your personal information–say, your email address or phone number–gets published online.
To create alerts:
- Sign in to your Google Dashboard.
- In the ‘Me on the Web’ section, click Set up search alerts for your data.
- Select the checkboxes beside the alerts (such as your name or email address) you’d like to receive.
- (Optional) Enter additional information (such as a home address) in the text field, then select the checkbox for that alert.
- (Optional) Click Add another alert to create alerts for additional personal information.
- In the ‘How often’ drop-down box, choose the alert frequency.
- In the ‘Deliver to’ drop-down box, choose which email address your alerts should be sent to.
- Click Save alert preferences.
Also, If you find content online–say, your telephone number or an embarrassing photo of you–that you don’t want to appear publicly, you can remove unwanted content from Google’s search results.
With all this social media era, information can be shared easily, but can be also wrong sometimes. This information often be used for something. For example, a company that research information about their applicants. If the information they got is wrong, the applicant will not be hired. So, with this Me on the Web, I think Google is trying to help protecting your reputation.
